Conversation Starters

[ Personal Enrichment : Social Skills : Conversation Starters ]

The ability to start conversations is a critical social skill, yet it remains one of the most difficult and feared actions we perform. Here is a list of tips to help you break the ice and begin conversations with confidence and pizzazz!

  • Keep in mind that you are only 50% of the equation in a conversation. It may well be the case that a given person simply doesn't want to have a conversation at that moment. Sometimes people have things weighing on their minds, or are too busy to engage in friendly banter. Try to tune into people's body language, facial expressions and other clues to determine if they will be good conversational prospects. If you try and fail to begin a conversation, don't immediately assume it was necessarily your fault!

  • Complimenting or praising something or someone is very good way to begin a conversation on a positive note. From there, you can usually develop the conversation quite easily by asking for more information about what you just praised, or for advice on the subject.
